Combination walk-in cooler and freezer

If you need a walk-in cooler and a walk-in freezer next to each other, a combination is the way to go: one custom-built unit, two temperatures. Walk from inside the cooler into the freezer, or give each side its own door on the outside wall.

Quick answer

A combination is a walk-in cooler and a walk-in freezer built as one unit, sharing an insulated wall. Combinations are custom made to fit your space and your needs, so there is almost no limit to the overall dimensions.

Each side is its own cold room — the cooler holding around 35°F, the freezer 0°F to -10°F — with its own refrigeration system sized for its temperature. Floors are included on the freezer side, as on every freezer we build.

Two ways to lay it out

Through the cooler, or two front doors

We can build it so you walk from inside the walk-in cooler into the walk-in freezer, or with both doors on the outside walls so each room has its own entrance. We welcome your email or call — we will help you design it.

Through the coolerOne door on the outside wall. You walk into the cooler and through a second door into the freezer, so the freezer door opens into cold air rather than the kitchen, and the outside wall gives up only one opening.
Separate entrance doorsBoth doors on the outside walls. Each room is reached without passing through the other, so freezer traffic never crosses the cooler and either side can be closed off on its own.

What a combination includes

  • Panels: 4″ insulation, 2009 EISA compliant, 26 gauge stucco-embossed Acrylume inside and out. Tongue-and-groove, cam-lock action, no wood perimeter, NSF Listed.
  • Freezer side: heavy-duty aluminum insulated floor included, pre-wired door heater, mounted pressure relief vent, electric-defrost evaporator with solenoid valve and defrost timer.
  • Cooler side: insulated floor optional — the panel walls can be secured to your slab with a vinyl screed for flush entry.
  • Two matched refrigeration systems — indoor remote, outdoor remote or self-contained, sized to each room and its temperature. See the catalogue.
  • Indoor or outdoor installation. Outdoor options available; other sizes offered on request.
  • A dimensioned approval drawing of both rooms, both doors and both systems before anything is manufactured.

Combination Cooler & Freezer FAQ

Which layout should I choose?

It comes down to traffic and wall space. If the freezer is opened a few times a day and the outside wall is short on room, going through the cooler uses one opening and keeps the freezer door out of the warm kitchen air. If both rooms are busy, or different people need each one, separate entrance doors keep freezer traffic out of the cooler. Tell us how the room is used and we will draw it both ways if it helps.

Does the freezer side get an insulated floor?

Yes. Floors are included in all walk-in freezers, and that does not change inside a combination. The cooler side is optional — it can sit on your slab with a vinyl screed.

How big can a combination be?

Since combinations are custom built to size there is almost no limit to the overall dimensions. Panels are manufactured to your measurements, so the split between cooler and freezer is wherever you need it.

Can it go outdoors?

Yes. If you are limited in space inside your store you can install the walk-in outdoors. Outdoor installation of the box and its refrigeration is available on request, and the outdoor condensing units are in our refrigeration catalogue.

What do you need from me for a quote?

The space you have to work with, roughly how much of it should be cooler and how much freezer, which layout you prefer, the temperatures you need, and whether it goes indoors or outside. You get a dimensioned approval drawing to sign off before anything is built.
